Peppermint White Russian: A Simple Christmas Twist

A Christmas Twist That Still Tastes Like a White Russian
A White Russian is already made for cosy evenings: rich coffee flavour, cool ice and a soft swirl of cream. A little peppermint gives it a festive finish, but the coffee should still be the star.
This version is built straight in a glass, so you can make one after dinner without getting a shaker out. It looks like an occasion. It takes hardly any effort.
Peppermint White Russian Recipe
Recipe details
- Prep time: About 3–5 minutes
- Difficulty: Easy
- Tools: Rocks glass, jigger or small measuring cup, and a spoon; no shaker
- Taste: Creamy, coffee-rich, gently minty and sweet
- Calories: Approximately 210–260 kcal per serving, depending on the liqueurs and dairy
- Serves: 1 cocktail
- Best served: In a rocks glass over fresh ice
Ingredients
- 45 ml vodka (1.5 oz)
- 30 ml coffee liqueur (1 oz)
- 5 ml peppermint schnapps (0.17 oz), plus up to another 5 ml (0.17 oz) to taste
- 30 ml half-and-half or pourable light cream (1 oz)
- Fresh ice
- Optional garnish: A mini candy cane, a little finely crushed peppermint sweet or a small fresh mint sprig
How to make it
- Fill a rocks glass with fresh ice.
- Pour in the vodka, coffee liqueur and 5 ml (0.17 oz) peppermint schnapps. Stir briefly to combine.
- Slowly add the cold half-and-half or cream. Pour it over the back of a spoon if you want a soft, marbled swirl.
- Give the drink a gentle stir, then taste. For a stronger mint note, add up to another 5 ml (0.17 oz) schnapps and stir again.
- Finish with a small candy cane or a light sprinkle of crushed peppermint, if you like, and serve immediately.
Love My Drink tip: The trick is to keep the coffee flavour in front and the peppermint in the background. A small measured pour makes that much easier than a generous splash.
Keep the Coffee Rich and the Peppermint Gentle
Peppermint schnapps varies in sweetness and intensity, so 5 ml (0.17 oz) is a good place to begin. Taste only after adding the cream: the dairy softens the sharper notes, and the finished drink may need no extra mint at all.
If the cocktail tastes too sweet, reduce the coffee liqueur slightly next time rather than changing everything at once. If it feels too rich, use whole milk in place of the cream. One small change is usually enough.
A Christmas Garnish That Doesn't Take Over
A mini candy cane tucked over the rim gives this drink its Christmas look without hiding the lovely coffee-and-cream swirl. Prefer something subtler? Add just a pinch of crushed peppermint sweet and a small fresh mint sprig, as in the photo.
For a partial candy-cane rim, moisten a small section of the glass very lightly with water and dip it in finely crushed candy cane. Leave most of the rim plain so the decoration stays playful, not overpowering.
Easy Swaps and Variations
- Lighter and less creamy: Replace the dairy with 30 ml whole milk (1 oz). The drink will be thinner, but the coffee will come through more clearly.
- No peppermint schnapps?: Start with 5 ml peppermint drink syrup (0.17 oz) instead and adjust carefully. Syrup adds sweetness but no extra alcohol; the vodka and coffee liqueur still make this an alcoholic cocktail.
- Chocolate-peppermint twist: Stir in 5 ml chocolate syrup (0.17 oz). It makes a sweeter dessert-style drink, so skip the candy rim if you prefer a cleaner finish.
Peppermint White Russian FAQ
Can I make it without a shaker?
Yes. Build the drink directly over ice in a rocks glass. Stir the vodka, coffee liqueur and schnapps together before adding the cream.
Can I use milk instead of cream?
Yes. Whole milk makes a lighter cocktail, while half-and-half or pourable light cream gives it a softer, silkier texture.
What can I use instead of peppermint schnapps?
A small amount of peppermint drink syrup works. Start with 5 ml (0.17 oz), since syrups can be sweet and concentrated. Use a food-grade syrup made for drinks, not peppermint essential oil.
Can I make it ahead for Christmas guests?
You can measure the vodka, coffee liqueur and peppermint schnapps ahead of time, then keep the mixture covered and chilled. Add fresh ice and cold cream to each glass just before serving so the texture and swirl look their best.

For a cosy Christmas evening, though, this peppermint version is hard to beat: cold coffee flavour, a soft cream swirl and just enough mint to make it feel festive.
