6 easy hot rum cocktails to make at home
1. Warm Spiced Apple Rum - fruity and gently spiced
This is the cosy apple drink with a little extra glow. Cinnamon and ginger make the kitchen smell lovely, while lemon stops the apple juice from tasting too sweet.
Time: About 8 minutes. Taste: Fruity, warm and lightly tart. Serves: 1.
Ingredients
- 45 ml (1.5 oz) gold or dark rum
- 150 ml (5 oz) cloudy apple juice, preferably with no added sugar
- 30 ml (1 oz) water
- 15 ml (0.5 oz) fresh lemon juice
- 1 small cinnamon stick and 2 thin slices of fresh ginger
- An apple slice or star anise, optional, to serve
How to make it
- Warm the apple juice, water, cinnamon and ginger in a small saucepan until steaming. Keep the heat low for around 5 minutes; do not let it boil hard.
- Remove from the heat and take out the cinnamon and ginger. Stir in the lemon juice and rum.
- Pour into a heatproof mug. Let it cool to a comfortable sipping temperature, then add an apple slice if you like.
Make it yours: If your apple juice is already sweet, add another 15-30 ml (0.5-1 oz) hot water instead of sugar. If it tastes flat, a little more lemon will wake it up.
2. Hot Buttered Rum - rich and slow-sipping
Butter, brown sugar and a little spice make this the richest drink on the list. It is the one to choose when you want something cosy and almost dessert-like.
At a glance: About 5 minutes. Taste: Buttery, gently sweet and spiced. Serves: 1.
What you need: Dark or gold rum, softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and hot water.
Easy approach: Mix softened butter with the sugar and spices, loosen it with hot water, then stir in the rum off the heat. For the exact amounts and a smooth, no-batter method, use our Hot Buttered Rum for One recipe.
3. Rum Hot Chocolate - the chocolate lover's pick
Warm, rich chocolate with a splash of rum feels like a little treat at the end of a long day. Unsweetened cocoa gives you better control over the sweetness.
At a glance: About 5 minutes. Taste: Chocolatey, creamy and gently warming. Serves: 1.
What you need: Milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, gold or dark rum, a pinch of salt and sugar to taste.
Easy approach: Make a smooth cocoa paste with a little cold milk, add the remaining milk and warm gently. Take it off the heat before stirring in the rum. Find the exact measurements and sweetness adjustments in our full Rum Hot Chocolate recipe.

4. Honey-Lemon Rum Toddy - bright and comforting
The classic Hot Toddy usually uses whiskey. Swap in mellow gold rum and you get a softer, slightly caramel-like variation, with honey and fresh lemon keeping it simple.
Time: About 5 minutes. Taste: Honeyed, citrusy and warm. Serves: 1.
Ingredients
- 45 ml (1.5 oz) gold or lightly aged rum
- 135 ml (4.5 oz) hot water
- 15 ml (0.5 oz) fresh lemon juice
- 10 ml (about 0.35 oz) honey
- A thin lemon slice, optional
How to make it
- Stir the honey into a small splash of hot water in a heatproof mug until dissolved.
- Add the lemon juice, remaining hot water and rum. Stir gently.
- Let it cool slightly, then taste. Add a little more hot water if you want a softer drink, or a small squeeze of lemon if it tastes too sweet.
Quick tip: The starting point is about one part rum to three parts water. Prefer the whiskey original? Our classic Hot Toddy recipe explains the honey-lemon balance.
5. Vanilla Chai Rum Latte - creamy, fragrant and easy
Chai brings the spices, warm milk makes it silky and a small pour of rum turns your favourite cosy tea into an after-dinner drink. It feels special without a single fancy tool.
Time: About 7 minutes. Taste: Creamy, tea-spiced and softly vanilla-scented. Serves: 1.
Ingredients
- 120 ml (4 oz) strongly brewed chai tea
- 90 ml (3 oz) milk or unsweetened oat milk
- 30 ml (1 oz) gold or spiced rum
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp honey or sugar, optional
How to make it
- Brew the chai slightly stronger than you would for an everyday cup. Remove the tea bag or strain the leaves.
- Warm the milk gently in a small saucepan until steaming. Pour it into a heatproof mug with the tea.
- Stir in the rum and vanilla. Taste before adding the optional honey or sugar, especially if your spiced rum is sweet.
Quick tip: Unsweetened chai is easiest to control. Sweetened chai concentrate can work too, but check its strength and reduce any extra sweetener.
6. Hot Rum and Cinnamon Coffee - simple and not too sweet
If coffee is your idea of a cosy evening, start here. A modest rum pour, freshly brewed coffee and a pinch of cinnamon make a wonderfully easy after-dinner sip.
Time: About 5 minutes. Taste: Coffee-forward, aromatic and lightly spiced. Serves: 1.
Ingredients
- 150 ml (5 oz) freshly brewed hot coffee
- 30 ml (1 oz) gold or dark rum
- A small pinch of ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp soft brown sugar, optional
- 30 ml (1 oz) warm milk or cream, optional, for a softer finish
How to make it
- Brew the coffee and pour it into a heatproof mug.
- Stir in the rum and a tiny pinch of cinnamon. Taste before adding any sugar.
- For a rounder, creamier drink, add the optional warm milk or cream.
Quick tip: Choose coffee you already enjoy drinking. Bitter, over-extracted coffee will not suddenly become smooth when you add rum.
Which rum works best in hot cocktails?
You do not need six bottles to make these six drinks. One good gold or lightly aged rum is a lovely all-round choice for apple, chocolate, tea and coffee. Dark rum makes the buttered drink richer, while spiced rum adds a handy cinnamon or vanilla shortcut.
- Gold or lightly aged rum: Your flexible starting point for most of the recipes.
- Dark rum: Try it in the buttered rum, chocolate or coffee if you like deeper caramel and toasted notes.
- Spiced rum: Especially nice with chai or hot chocolate. Taste before adding sugar, as some spiced rums are already sweet.
- White rum: It can work, but its lighter character is often less noticeable beside strong warm spices.

3 small tricks for better hot rum drinks
- Heat the mixer, not the rum. Warm your apple juice, milk, tea or coffee first. Stir in rum after taking the saucepan off the heat. There is no need to boil the alcohol.
- Use the right mug. Choose heatproof glass or ceramic suitable for hot drinks. Ordinary thin cocktail glasses may crack with sudden heat.
- Taste before sweetening. Juice, hot chocolate mixes and spiced rums can already be sweet. Start small; add a little lemon or water when a drink tastes too heavy.
Hot rum cocktail FAQ
Can I make hot cocktails with white rum?
Yes. White rum works in warm apple juice or a honey-lemon toddy, although gold or dark rum usually brings a fuller flavour to rich chocolate, coffee and buttered drinks.
Should I boil rum for a hot cocktail?
No. Heat the non-alcoholic base until steaming, take it off the heat and stir in the rum. Boiling is unnecessary and can flatten the flavour. The finished drink still contains alcohol.
Can I prepare these hot rum drinks ahead of time?
You can prepare an apple-spice base or brew the chai ahead, then cool and refrigerate it promptly. Reheat the base gently and add the rum just before serving. Chocolate and milk-based drinks are nicest freshly made.
Are these recipes for one person or a group?
Each recipe makes one mug. For guests, multiply the non-alcoholic ingredients by the number of servings and heat the base together, then measure the rum into each mug. It is also easy to leave the alcohol out of an individual serving.
One warm mug is a lovely place to start
For the easiest first try, make the spiced apple rum. For something richer, reach for hot chocolate. And if all you have is coffee, cinnamon and a bottle of rum, you already have a cosy little evening sorted.
