Yuzu Highball Recipe: The 3-Ingredient Citrus Cocktail for When Lemon Feels Boring
Approx. 5 min read
A classic Highball is all about whisky, cold soda and restraint. Yuzu gives that familiar shape a brighter, more aromatic citrus edge without making the drink complicated.
This is the kind of drink you make when you want something easy but not predictable. It tastes like you tried harder than you did.
Easy Yuzu Highball Recipe
Recipe details
- Difficulty: Easy
- Prep time: 2 minutes
- Glass: Highball
- Tools: Jigger or measuring cup, bar spoon or long teaspoon
- Taste: Crisp, aromatic, citrusy, lightly sweet
- Serves: 1 cocktail
Ingredients
- 45 ml Japanese whisky (1.5 oz)
- 15 ml sweetened yuzu cordial or yuzu syrup (0.5 oz)
- 90 ml very cold soda water (3 oz)
- Fresh ice
- Yuzu peel or lemon peel, optional
How to make it
- Fill a tall Highball glass completely with fresh ice.
- Pour in 45 ml Japanese whisky (1.5 oz) and 15 ml yuzu cordial (0.5 oz).
- Stir once or twice to combine.
- Slowly top with 90 ml very cold soda water (3 oz).
- Lift the mixture once gently with a bar spoon or long teaspoon so you keep as much fizz as possible.
- Finish with a thin yuzu peel if you have one, or lemon peel if you do not.
Quick tip: Keep the soda very cold and fill the glass well with ice. Taste your cordial before pouring too: some brands are much sweeter or more concentrated than others.
The Yuzu Dial: 10, 15 or 20 ml?
A small change in yuzu makes a noticeable difference. Keep the whisky at 45 ml (1.5 oz) and the soda at 90 ml (3 oz), then adjust only the cordial.
- 10 ml (about 1/3 oz): subtle, drier and more whisky-forward
- 15 ml (0.5 oz): balanced and the best place to start
- 20 ml (about 2/3 oz): brighter, sweeter and more yuzu-forward
Start at 15 ml for your first glass. If the citrus disappears behind the whisky, add a little more next time. If the drink starts feeling more like fizzy citrus than a Highball, pull it back.

Yuzu cordial vs yuzu juice: do not use them the same way
This recipe is built for sweetened yuzu cordial or yuzu syrup. Pure yuzu juice is sharper and unsweetened, so pouring the same amount will not give you the same balance.
If you have yuzu cordial or syrup
Use the recipe as written. Start at 15 ml (0.5 oz), then use the Yuzu Dial to make the next glass drier or brighter. This is the easiest way to keep the drink genuinely three-ingredient.
If you only have pure yuzu juice
Start with 10 ml pure yuzu juice (about 1/3 oz). Taste before adding more. If the drink feels too sharp, add 5-10 ml simple syrup (1-2 tsp) to balance it. That makes it a four-ingredient version, but it usually works better than treating unsweetened juice like cordial.
The useful rule is simple: cordial brings citrus plus sweetness. Pure juice mainly brings citrus and acidity.
What does yuzu taste like in a cocktail?
Yuzu tastes bright and fragrant rather than simply sour. It can suggest lemon, grapefruit and mandarin at the same time, with a slightly bitter edge and an aroma that feels especially vivid in a fizzy drink.
That is why it works so well here. The whisky still has room to show up, while the yuzu makes the Highball feel fresher and less familiar. Lemon is clean. Yuzu is a little more curious.
Three easy ways to change your Yuzu Highball
1. Make it drier
Use 10 ml yuzu cordial (0.35 oz) and keep everything else the same. This lets the Japanese whisky lead.
2. Swap whisky for gin
Use 45 ml gin (1.5 oz) in place of the whisky. The drink becomes more botanical while keeping the same easy Highball build.
3. Try it with shochu
Swap the whisky for 45 ml shochu (1.5 oz) for a lighter variation. If shochu is new to you, our beginner guide to shochu explains the main styles and four simple ways to drink it.
Yuzu Highball FAQ
Can I use regular whisky instead of Japanese whisky?
Yes. A light blended whisky is the easiest substitute. Bourbon also works, but it will make the drink rounder and sweeter, so try the 10 ml yuzu setting first.
Can I use pure yuzu juice instead of yuzu syrup?
Yes, but do not use it as a direct one-for-one swap. Start with 10 ml pure yuzu juice (about 1/3 oz), taste, and add a small amount of simple syrup if it is too sharp.
Do I need a cocktail shaker?
No. Build the Yuzu Highball directly in the glass. No shaker, no strainer, no fuss.
When lemon feels a little too obvious
Japanese whisky. Yuzu. Soda. That is the whole drink, and that simplicity is exactly why it works.
Start at 15 ml yuzu cordial, keep everything properly cold and adjust the citrus by 5 ml next time if you want it brighter or drier. If easy drinks are your thing, keep our 3 Ingredient Cocktails You Can Make in Minutes nearby for your next pour.
Looks like effort. Isn’t. You will probably make this one again.
