Blood-Red Halloween Punch for 10: The Recipe
Recipe details
- Serves: 10 generous glasses
- Yield: 2.75 litres (about 93 US fl oz), before ice, garnish or optional syrup
- Prep time: 10 minutes, plus chilling if your ingredients are not already cold
- Difficulty: Easy; no shaker needed
- Taste: Dark cherry, bright cranberry, pomegranate tang and a fresh lime finish
- Strength: About 6% ABV before ice when made with 40% ABV vodka; each glass contains 40 ml (1.35 US fl oz) of vodka
- Tools: 4-litre (roughly 1-gallon) punch bowl or two large pitchers, measuring jug and ladle
- Best served: Very cold, over ice in roomy tumblers
Ingredients
- 850 ml (28.7 US fl oz) chilled cranberry juice drink, the sweetened ready-to-drink kind
- 650 ml (22 US fl oz) chilled sweet cherry juice, ready to drink rather than concentrated syrup
- 450 ml (15.2 US fl oz) chilled pomegranate juice
- 400 ml (13.5 US fl oz) chilled vodka
- 100 ml (3.4 US fl oz) freshly squeezed lime juice, from roughly 3–4 limes
- 300 ml (10.1 US fl oz) very cold sparkling water or soda water, for a gentle fizz
- Ice for the glasses
- A handful of blackberries or pitted dark cherries, plus a few thin lime wheels, to garnish (optional)
- Optional for balancing: 15–30 ml (0.5–1 US fl oz) simple syrup, only if the finished base tastes too sharp
Before you pour: Cranberry juice drink and pure unsweetened cranberry juice are not interchangeable here. The pure juice is much tarter. Likewise, use ordinary drinkable cherry juice, not undiluted cherry cordial or concentrate. Those two shopping choices make the biggest difference to the final flavour.
How to make it
- Start cold. Refrigerate the juices, vodka and sparkling water in advance. A cold punch needs less dilution from melting ice.
- Build the red base. In a 4-litre punch bowl or a large covered jug, combine the cranberry juice drink, cherry juice, pomegranate juice and vodka. Stir until evenly mixed.
- Brighten and taste. Stir in the fresh lime juice. Taste the base while it is cold. If it is too sharp, add a little simple syrup, starting with 15 ml (0.5 US fl oz). If it is too sweet, add an extra squeeze of lime. Adjust gradually; different juice brands behave differently.
- Add the sparkle last. Just before serving, pour in the cold sparkling water and give the punch one gentle stir. Add the blackberries or cherries and lime wheels if using.
- Serve the first round. Pour into ten roomy glasses with fresh ice. The batch allows about 275 ml (9.3 US fl oz) of punch per person before ice; use large glasses or make smaller pours and keep some for refills.
Why it tastes good: Cherry brings soft, rounded fruit; cranberry gives the punch a lively edge; and pomegranate adds depth. Fresh lime keeps it from tasting like overly sweet fruit juice. The vodka is deliberately subtle, so label the punch clearly as alcoholic even though it tastes fruity.
That Blood-Red Colour, Without Food Dye
The trick is in the fruit, not a bottle of food colouring. Pomegranate and dark cherry build the ruby tone; cranberry brings the brighter red edge. The exact shade changes with the juices you buy, which is why a tiny test can save you from a disappointing bowl.
The one-glass rehearsal: Want to be certain before party night? Mix 85 ml cranberry juice drink, 65 ml cherry juice, 45 ml pomegranate juice, 40 ml vodka and 10 ml fresh lime juice. Add 30 ml cold sparkling water and serve over ice. That is exactly one-tenth of the full recipe, so you can taste your particular juices and see the finished colour before making the big bowl. If it looks purple rather than red, a different cherry or cranberry juice may make more difference than any garnish.
For a clean, striking look, choose juices without pulp and leave berries whole instead of mashing them. A transparent bowl, a few dark cherries or blackberries and perhaps two thin lime wheels are enough. Let the colour do the decorating.
A tiny extra that guests will notice: The night before, freeze a pitted dark cherry inside each of ten ice cubes. Drop one into every glass just before you pour. They look like little dark jewels in the red punch, and you get a playful Halloween detail without plastic decorations or a complicated garnish.
Make It Ahead, Then Enjoy Your Own Halloween Party
Do the measuring before the doorbell starts ringing. The fruit-and-vodka base can wait in the fridge; you only need to finish it with lime, bubbles and a simple garnish as guests arrive.
- Up to 24 hours before: Mix the cranberry, cherry and pomegranate juices with the vodka in a covered container. Refrigerate promptly. Keep the sparkling water sealed and cold.
- Earlier on the day: Wash and prepare the garnish, squeeze the limes, chill the punch bowl and put fresh ice aside for serving.
- Five minutes before the first pour: Move the base into the bowl, add lime, taste, then finish with sparkling water and garnish.
For the most consistent flavour, put the ice into individual glasses. If you like the look of a few large cubes in the punch bowl, add them right as you serve, not while the punch sits for hours. For a longer evening, keep some of the still base refrigerated and add its share of the measured sparkling water only when that portion goes out. Do not top up with extra soda just to refresh the bowl.
If you make party drinks regularly, our guide to batching cocktails without making them watery explains the same make-ahead principle for all kinds of cocktails.
Want an Alcohol-Free Blood-Red Punch?
You can keep the same colour, fruit flavours and ten-serving yield without vodka. Simply replace the 400 ml (13.5 US fl oz) of vodka with another 400 ml (13.5 US fl oz) of chilled sparkling water. That gives you 700 ml (23.7 US fl oz) of sparkling water in total. Add all of it just before serving, not the night before.
A clever setup for five cocktail drinkers and five non-drinkers
Rather than make two completely different recipes, start with one shared juice base. You will get two matching ruby-red pitchers, and nobody has to settle for a plain soft drink.
- Mix the three fruit juices only. Together they make 1.95 litres (about 66 US fl oz). Divide equally between two pitchers.
- Stir 50 ml (1.7 US fl oz) fresh lime juice into each pitcher.
- At serving time, add 200 ml (6.8 US fl oz) vodka and 150 ml (5.1 US fl oz) sparkling water to the alcoholic pitcher. Add 350 ml (11.8 US fl oz) sparkling water to the alcohol-free pitcher.
- Mark the pitchers clearly. Each makes five servings of about 275 ml (9.3 US fl oz), before ice.
Use the same glassware and fruit garnish for both. A proper alcohol-free option should feel like part of the party, not an afterthought.
Is One Bowl Enough for 10 Guests?
For one round, yes. Pour roughly 275 ml (9.3 US fl oz) per guest into roomy 450-500 ml (15-17 US fl oz) tumblers so there is space for the ice as well as the drink. Have smaller glasses? Serve 200-225 ml (6.8-7.6 US fl oz) each and you will get around 12-13 pours. Smaller servings are lovely when guests want to try something else too.
Use a bowl that holds at least 4 litres (about 1 US gallon) so there is space to stir without spills. For 10 ice-filled glasses, about 1.5-2 kg (3.3-4.4 lb) of serving ice is a practical starting point; reserve more for refills and chilling other drinks.
One batch is not a whole evening of drinks. If punch is the main option for a longer party, plan a second batch or offer other drinks, including water and a clearly marked alcohol-free choice. Our party drinks guide for 10, 20, 30 or 50 guests helps you plan the rest.
Halloween Punch FAQ
Can I use tart cherry juice instead of sweet cherry juice?
Yes, if it is ready-to-drink juice rather than a concentrate, but expect a sharper result. Taste the chilled base and add a small amount of simple syrup if the fruit needs rounding out. Do not add syrup automatically; cranberry products vary a lot in sweetness already.
Does this punch need grenadine or red food colouring?
No. Pomegranate and cherry do the colour work. Grenadine can push it towards a candy-sweet flavour, which this punch does not need.
Can I use a drinks dispenser instead of a punch bowl?
Absolutely. Keep the liquid smooth and put fruit garnishes in the glasses, not inside the dispenser, where berries or slices could block the tap. If you have a smaller dispenser, keep the rest of the base cold in the fridge and refill as needed.
Can I double the recipe for 20 guests?
Yes. Double every liquid quantity for 5.5 litres (about 186 US fl oz) before ice and garnish: enough for twenty 275 ml (9.3 US fl oz) pours. Split it between two punch bowls of at least 4 litres each rather than filling one bowl to the brim. You will need 800 ml (27 US fl oz) vodka and 600 ml (20.3 US fl oz) sparkling water in total; keep the same juice-to-lime proportions.
Your Halloween Drinks Table, Sorted
One deep-red bowl, a stack of glasses, something salty to snack on and a jug of water within reach. The drink can be the decoration.
